What is RAT?
When you first find out about a company, especially a non-profit, it’s always nice to find out more about the company. This is the place to do it!
Rebel Alliance Theatre is a non-profit 501(c)3 status.
What does this mean?
This means that Rebel puts the emphasis of our business on education and the art of theatre, rather than trying to drive a profit first. All of our members are currently volunteer and we rely largely on grants and donations, supplemented by ticket sales in order to continue doing our work within the community.
Our Core Values
-
Small voices deserve to be heard and drown out the majority. Immigrants, Women, BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, and other minority groups matter to us. When we can, we strive to tell stories that bring issues surrounding equality to the forefront of everyone's mind. Many core members identify as LGBTQIA+ as well.
-
We live in a society, and that society lives on this planet. I don't know if you know this, but I happen to like living on this planet, since we don't have any other options. Rebel Alliance Theatre core members are passionate about the current state of the world, while also being scared. When we can, we do our best to be as sustainable as possible with sourcing our props, costumes, and materials, and we keep our minds on the environment, always.
-
Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another.
To be human is to have empathy. Theatre promotes and teaches this empathy by telling stories about humans being humans. Actors need to listen to one another on stage to tell a story. The audience listens to the story being told.
Without empathy, what are we?
-
Organic is referencing the type of acting that Rebel Alliance Theatre does. Organic acting gives the actor autonomy on how their character is feeling and reacts. The character is coming out of the actor’s emotions and experiences. We do not do blocking or tell actors how to play a part.
The actor is not Sally playing Horatio; rather, they are Horatio trying to talk to his friend Hamlet about the spectre of his dead father.
-
We are all made up of our own stories. These stories have value. Storytelling has been an integral part of humanity since the dawn of time. It is incredibly complex to be a human and stories are an attempt to pass on knowledge, information, and understanding.
Stories are at the core of creating radical empathy.
